Corrosion testing

Testing the corrosion resistance of products – external corrosion

Objects are tested in artificial corrosive atmospheres (e.g. salt spray, immersion in corrosive solutions, sulfur dioxide environment, specific climatic conditions, condensation of water vapor, etc). The surfaces of the objects and their base material are evaluated. Tests can be performed on reference samples (e.g. coated and/or galvanized vehicle body parts) or on finished objects (e.g. LPG tanks, bumpers, wipers, heat exchangers, rocker arms, brackets, covers, etc.). The laboratory also has the ability to test items not related to the automotive industry.

So-called internal corrosion tests are also performed in the laboratory, where test objects (mainly heat exchangers) are subjected to simulated operation with fluids causing accelerated corrosion, or exhaust gas condensate.

Equipment

The laboratory has a number of corrosion chambers that meet various customers’ requirements:

  • Liebisch
  • ASCOTT
  • Weiss Technik
  • Heraeus
  • Vötsch
  • VLM
  • Kesternich

In addition, the laboratory is able to prepare a suitable test chamber or test stand to suit specific customer requirements.

Testing of internal corrosion and erosion

The institute has a number of aging and corrosion/internal erosion (internal and high flow corrosion) test stands. These test stands and/or chambers are often built for a requested test.

Testing in noxious gas environment

The test in flowing mixed gas corrosion test allows to determine the corrosive effect of the working and storage environment on electrotechnical components, especially contacts, terminals and connections (considered both separately and as integrated into a component or assembled as a complete equipment).

Tested samples are placed in the AirEvent Gas/600/0 and SK1500 chambers under various temperature and humidity conditions, in the atmosphere of single corrosive gas or their mixture:

  • Cl2
  • SO2
  • NO2
  • H2S

Gases are mixed with together depending on the test method and/or Customer requirements. The working range of gases concentration is from 10 to 2700 ppb in case of H2S).

Gases concentration are monitored with the use of SPM Flex Honeywell analyser (in case of AirEvent Gas/600/0).

Preferred test duration is 4, 7, 10, 14 or 21 days.

Test standards

  • IEC 60068-2-60
  • PN-EN 60512-11-14
  • ASTM B845-97
  • Renault 36-00-802
  • VW 80000
